Exhibition of national drawing contest entries
A Grafton Regional Gallery touring initiative, JADA: Jacaranda Acquisitive Drawing Award Exhibition, will open at the University of the Sunshine Coast Gallery at 6pm on Thursday 24 March.
JADA is the flagship of the Grafton Regional Gallery, which promotes excellence in Australian contemporary drawing. Acquisitions from the annual exhibition enter the gallery’s nationally recognised collection of Australian contemporary drawing.
The exhibition at USC will be officially opened by Grafton Regional Gallery Director Jude McBean.
USC Gallery Curator Dawn Oelrich said the main exhibition held in Grafton in October 2010 attracted a record 400 entries.
“What we will see at the USC Gallery, though, is the touring component that presents the best of the best, which comprises 43 works,” Ms Oelrich said.
“Queensland artists, as usual, are well represented and work by Sunshine Coast artists Gabrielle Turnbull and Kevin Oxley are included in the exhibition.
“Sydney artist Peter Alwast won the award in October, and the Grafton Regional Gallery acquired works by Anna Hoyle, Lisa Jones and Miles Hall, who also won the Sunshine Coast Art Prize in 2010.”
Ms Oelrich said the Grafton Regional Gallery maintained one of Australia’s foremost collections of drawings with support from the Friends of Grafton Gallery and a raft of other sponsors.
The touring exhibition will continue at the USC Gallery until Saturday 30 April. The Gallery is located at the University campus on Sippy Downs Drive, Sippy Downs. It is open free to the public from 10am to 4pm Monday to Saturday and closed Sundays and public holidays.
JADA is the second exhibition of the 2011 University of the Sunshine Coast Gallery program, which is proudly supported by Coastline BMW and the Kurtz family.
