Festival to highlight easy sustainability options

USC student Haylie Nowicki will help run some of the children's activities at the 2011 World Environment Day Festival

30 May 2011

Easy ways for people to live more sustainable lifestyles will be highlighted at the 2011 Sunshine Coast World Environment Day Festival at the University of the Sunshine Coast on Sunday 5 June.

The annual festival, which is expected to attract thousands of people from across the region, has been jointly organised by the Sunshine Coast Environment Council, the Sunshine Coast Council and USC.

USC’s Director of Regional Engagement Sharon Hall said the event from 9am to 4pm will feature forums about the “green economy” and carbon emissions, trade displays, presentations by community groups involved in local environmental projects and a range of fun events for children.

Highlights will include the annual ECOflicks film festival, a solar-powered car demonstration, a clothing exchange, battery recycling, wildlife presentations, solar power displays and cooking demonstrations.

“This festival seeks to showcase ideas that will empower you to make choices about when and where to reduce your environmental impacts without compromising your lifestyle,” Ms Hall said.

“It also seeks to showcase some of the exciting products and services that are coming onto the market and radically redefine how we do business.”

A group of USC Public Relations students will attend the festival to hand out toolkits designed to help people create "greener" streets across the Sunshine Coast.

The final-year students — Birgit Kehr, Simone Gardiner and Niklas Niestendiedrich — developed the five-step Greening Your Streets guide in conjunction with the Sunshine Coast Council to offer people practical and cost-effective ways to adopt sustainable practices in their neighbourhoods.

Translink is supporting this year’s festival by offering free bus travel on Sunbus scheduled services to and from the University between 8am and 5pm.
