Five-star hotel career for Tourism graduate

University of the Sunshine Coast graduate Lyndsey Jack

10 August 2011

A University of the Sunshine Coast graduate who was an intern at Hyatt Regency Coolum as part of her Business degree has worked her way up in the company to become Human Resources Manager at the Grand Hyatt Melbourne.

Lyndsey Jack, 25, moved from Chancellor Park to Victoria a year ago after gaining the HR Assistant Manager’s job at the luxury hotel chain in Melbourne.

The former student of St Luke’s Anglican School in Bundaberg was appointed HR Manager in June, reporting to the HR Director and in charge of 500 staff.

“My daily tasks involve recruitment, payroll, employee relations, liaison and support with other departments,” Ms Jack said.

“I love the brand but it’s not just the glamour of a five-star environment, it’s the culture of a workplace that people enjoy.”

Ms Jack said her USC studies kick-started and nurtured her career, which she expects will involve international travel.

“I finished my Business (Tourism) degree at the end of 2006 and got a full-time position straight away as recruitment administrator at Hyatt Coolum,” she said.

That appointment followed two part-time jobs and a voluntary internship at the hotel while she studied at Sippy Downs.

“Part of the Tourism major was a practicum, where students can get a foot in the door at industry level, and I certainly got that at Hyatt,” Ms Jack said.

She said another highlight of studying at USC was building one-on-one relationships with lecturers such as Dr Gayle Mayes and Caroline Sorby, who is also Human Resources Director at Hyatt Regency Coolum.

Ms Jack said Hyatt’s training program boosted her professional development.
