Global economist to provide job creation tips
An international economist who has spent 30 years helping local communities achieve sustainable economic development will focus on Coast entrepreneurism when he visits the University of the Sunshine Coast in September and November.
Italian-born Dr Ernesto Sirolli will deliver a public seminar at the USC Innovation Centre on Monday 12 September and will return to the campus in November for a three-day workshop and mentoring program with government, community leaders, USC academics and PhD students.
The Noosa Institute for Socio-Economic & Environmental Research (NISER) has partnered with the Sirolli Institute to hold the one-day community and economic seminar and three-day conference, supported by the USC Business Faculty and the Sunshine Coast Regional Council.
USC Senior Lecturer in Innovation and Entrepreneurship Dr Rod Farr-Wharton, who is participating in both events, said Dr Sirolli was an inspiring speaker whose methods were well-suited to the Sunshine Coast situation.
“His model of Enterprise Facilitation has been successful across many countries and industries, such as small-town Western Australian tuna farmers who started making huge profits decades ago by targeting exports,” Dr Farr-Wharton said.
Dr Farr-Wharton, whose research includes examining why Enterprise Facilitation works, said the model helped people turn passionate business ideas into start-up companies.
“This is a great opportunity for both the University and the Sunshine Coast,” he said. “We can encourage more school and university graduates to remain in our region by helping them create their own quality jobs.”
Dr Sirolli is expected to focus on the personal development of potential and existing business people on the Coast, particularly in the tourism industry.
He will explain his “Trinity of Management” principles which urge individuals to take charge of only those elements of a business they’re passionate about (the product/service, the marketing or the financial control) and seek help for the other elements.
The one-day seminar will be from 10am to 4pm at USC’s Innovation Centre on Monday 12 September. For registration and details go to www.niser.org.au or call 5442 6834.
