Headstart scholarships for 18 students

28 August 2011

The University of the Sunshine Coast will honour 18 high-achieving high school students from across the region at its annual Headstart Scholarships awards night tomorrow (Monday 29 August).

This event, from 6-7.30pm, will recognise and reward the students’ efforts to further their education through USC’s award-winning Headstart program for Year 11 and 12 students.

Scholarship donors include the Kirk Foundation, the Encouragement Foundation and the Rainbow Charitable Foundation. Representatives of these organisations will present $400 scholarships to students who hail from nine different schools.

Media are welcome to attend the ceremony at USC’s Innovation Centre auditorium. Guests will be arriving from 5.30-6pm.

Headstart is designed to create a seamless transition from school to tertiary study, allowing Year 11 and 12 students to complete accredited university courses while still at school.

Since 2003, the popular program has provided hundreds of high school students from Redcliffe to Gympie with a valuable pre-taste of what it’s like to attend university.

In 2009, USC’s Headstart program earned a prestigious Australian Learning and Teaching Council citation for enhancing the development of Year 11 and 12 students as individuals and as learners.

Those interested in finding out more about Headstart can attend a special information evening about the program at USC on Wednesday 7 September.

Applications to take part in Headstart for Semester 1, 2012, will close on Friday 28 October 2011. For more details, contact USC’s External Relations on 5456 5000 or email: options@usc.edu.au
