Journalism book scoops another award

Associate Professor Stephen Lamble with his book, News as it Happens: An Introduction to Journalism

25 November 2011

Many journalism graduates from the University of the Sunshine Coast will readily attest to how good a teacher USC’s Associate Professor of Journalism Stephen Lamble is.

Now Dr Lamble’s influence on journalism studies is set to extend much further afield with his recently-released book, News as it Happens: An Introduction to Journalism, attracting national attention and winning awards.

Earlier this year, the book – published by Oxford University Press – was named the Best Designed Tertiary and Higher Education Book at the 2011 Australian Publisher Association design awards.

It has since won an even more prestigious award, being judged the co-winner in the Australian Educational Publishing Awards’ category for the Best Single Tertiary Education Book by an Australian author.

Dr Lamble said he was particularly thrilled about his book receiving this second award at the Australian Educational Publishing Awards 2011 in Melbourne recently.

“While the previous award was for the design of the book, this one is for its content and its impact on teaching and learning,” he said.

“The awards are judged for clarity of writing, pedagogical implications, illustrations, special features and characteristics, quality of subject matter, innovation and flair.

“This was totally unexpected but to say I’m delighted would be an understatement,” he said.

The former Sunday Mail senior journalist and bureau chief said News as it Happens was a scholarly reference work and a textbook that spanned all three years of an undergraduate journalism degree.

“It is also a research-informed, peer-reviewed reference work for postgraduate students and a ready reference that graduates can keep and take with them into newsrooms,” he said.

Dr Lamble wrote the book over two years, a period in which he still lectured, coordinated the USC journalism program and was Head of the School of Communication.

The book includes contributions from some of Australia’s leading journalists, including Caroline Jones, Andrew Denton, Liz Jackson, Bob Bottom and Virginia Trioli, and input from Sunshine Coast journalists and USC journalism educators like Jane Fynes-Clinton, Peter Owen, Rosanna Natoli and Peter English.
