Knee injury sparks paramedic’s career
A University of the Sunshine Coast graduate whose decision to study Paramedic Science was sparked by his hospitalisation for a knee injury while surf life saving is now living his dream career in Rockhampton.
Leigh Anderson, 23, of Yeppoon, has been an Advanced Care Paramedic based at North Rockhampton and Woorabinda stations for the past 21 months.
“When I was about 18, I hurt my knee while surf life saving and required an ambulance to take me to hospital where I was very well cared for,” he said.
“After surgery, my knee became severely infected and I was ill at home, again requiring the Queensland Ambulance Service. I realised what an important role the QAS plays and how amazing the officers are to help complete strangers.”
The former school captain of Palm Beach Currumbin State High School said he chose the University of the Sunshine Coast to “reach my goal of becoming a paramedic while living the lifestyle of sun, surf and fun”.
Leigh made the most of his USC experience, participating in sports competitions and becoming president of the Sunshine Coast University Paramedic Association affiliated with the Australian College of Ambulance Professionals.
“The thing I liked most was the culture within USC and the special bond we formed within our Paramedic Science group,” he said.
“The lecturers and tutors were fantastic, always making time to help you get through your studies or through anything you were struggling with.
“Through the USC program, I completed a 40-week practicum with the QAS at North Rockhampton while finishing my studies through correspondence. Upon graduation, I accepted an offer of employment at the same station.”
Leigh said he enjoyed the challenges of providing an emergency service that met the highest world standards.
“I like dealing with people and remaining calm in situations that most people would find chaotic,” he said.
“Putting on those blue gloves as you hear the siren while going to a job is a feeling that cannot be replaced. I’ve always had that desire to help others.”
