Headstart students enjoy experiencing tertiary study at USC

26 August 2011

Senior high school students who are keen to experience what it’s like to go to university have been invited to the University of the Sunshine Coast’s annual Headstart information evening on Wednesday 7 September.

The information session, from 6pm to 7.30pm, is for students who will be in Years 11 and 12 in 2012 and their parents.

It will cover the benefits of doing USC’s award-winning Headstart program, the program requirements, the costs involved and the scholarships available for applicants. Visitors can also join in guided tours of the University from 5.15pm.

USC’s Acting External Relations Manager Julie Flanagan said Headstart provided a seamless transition from school to university by giving students a real taste of tertiary study.

“In Headstart, the Year 11 and 12 students attend lectures and tutorials with university students and learn from academics with practical industry experience,” she said.

“They can complete accredited university courses in their area of interest while still at high school and can extend their academic experiences with courses that count towards their Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE).”

Ms Flanagan said there were more than 90 courses to choose from, including two courses which make up the new Headstart to Indonesian program.

This program has been backed by the Commonwealth Government’s Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR) through its National Asian Languages and Studies in Schools Program.

An ability to speak an Asian language will be a huge advantage for students whatever their future careers, developing readiness to embrace international opportunities.

DEEWR has provided 60 scholarships, which cover the Headstart course tuition fees plus course materials.

Ms Flanagan said more than 950 students from high schools between Redcliffe and Gympie have participated in USC’s Headstart program since it began in 2003.

To register for the Headstart information event, visit www.usc.edu.au/info or contact USC’s External Relations on 5456 5000 or email: options@usc.edu.au

Headstart applications for Semester 1, 2012, will close on Friday 28 October 2011.
