PR student helps organise awards event

Jillian Pozzi and Lucy Warren

12 October 2011

A University of the Sunshine Coast student will draw on her experiences of a recent exchange to Germany as she helps organise one of the region’s main multicultural events.

Third-year Public Relations student Lucy Warren and two classmates – Jillian Pozzi and Emma Barton – are managing the 2011 Multicultural Excellence Awards in conjunction with the Sunshine Coast Community Cooperative.

Lucy, 19, of Buderim has recently returned from Germany after participating in USC’s Global Opportunities (GO) program. She studied at Fachhochschule Koblenz, RheinAhrCampus, at Remagen, as part of her degree.

“After coming back to Australia after a year abroad in Germany, I was suddenly aware of just how many Germans have migrated to the Sunshine Coast,” she said.

“Having just experienced a different culture, I can really appreciate the journey and experiences international students and others face when they come to Australia and the hurdles they have to overcome to integrate with society.”

This is the second year that USC students have been asked to organise the Multicultural Excellence Awards as part of a Public Relations course.

“The awards aim to recognise the contribution migrants make to the Sunshine Coast community,” Lucy said.

“There are seven categories in which people will receive awards, ranging from arts to sport, and business to youth achievement.

“We are inviting people who have made a difference to nominate or be nominated.”

The awards ceremony will be held at the Coastline BMW showroom in Currimundi on 5 November. Nominations close 14 October.
