Seminar to focus on stormwater

Dr Terry Lucke

19 October 2011

A University of the Sunshine Coast academic will reveal new research into methods for stormwater harvesting at a free industry seminar tomorrow (Thursday 20 October).

Senior Lecturer in Civil Engineering Dr Terry Lucke has led an international study into siphonic roof drainage systems as an improved way of collecting and reusing rainwater from commercial and industrial buildings.

He will be one of five speakers at a Stormwater Research Seminar at USC’s Innovation Centre auditorium from 8am-12.15pm.

“A siphonic roof drainage system acts like a big siphon and uses negative pressure to drain water from gutters,” he said.

“You’re basically using the height of the building to drain the system, and you can do that using only one or two downpipes.

“I would think that about 10 per cent of new commercial buildings are being siphonically drained, yet the majority of engineers still haven’t heard of it.”

Three of Australia’s major stormwater product suppliers – Humes, Rocla and Stormwater 360 – also will present at the seminar, showcasing the latest industry technologies.

“As we move toward more sustainable cities, stormwater management and water sensitive urban design (WSUD) issues are becoming increasingly important in our everyday lives,” Dr Lucke said.

“As the region’s leading education and research institution, USC organises free industry seminars to help disseminate new knowledge within the industry, particularly when it aligns with the region’s sustainability objectives.”
