SIFE leader to attend Malaysian conference
A University of the Sunshine Coast third-year Business student has won a three-day trip to a Malaysian conference for her outstanding contribution to an organisation that develops social responsibility in leaders of the future.
Amy Jones, 23, is one of two Queensland tertiary students selected and sponsored by global non-profit group SIFE (Students In Free Enterprise) to join its World Cup in Kuala Lumpur from 3-5 October.
About 1,500 students, academics and business leaders from 39 countries will attend the 2011 World Cup, where national SIFE teams present their community-minded business ideas and activities to vie for international victory.
Ms Jones, of Alexandra Headland, will be supporting Australia’s winning team, this year from Melbourne, and attending a cultural fair, skills and careers workshops and receptions.
“I’ll be busy networking because I’m in my third year of my USC Bachelor of Business and my long-term goal is to be CEO of SIFE Australia,” she said.
“I love the opportunities that SIFE gives students to put the theory of their degrees into practice. It really promotes the positive power of business and is all about sustainability.”
Ms Jones was president of the USC SIFE group for 18 months and is now vice-president. She is proud of the group’s recent Dob in a Donor campaign to “generate a new generation of blood donors on campus”.
Last year’s campaign was a Let’s Can Hunger Challenge, where students asked local residents to donate non-perishable foods for the needy.
USC Business academic Selina Tomasich said she was proud of Ms Jones’ selection for Malaysia after such dedicated work as SIFE president on campus.
“This World Cup will open Amy’s networks to the top CEOs of companies from around the world, which will certainly help when she’s applying for employment after graduation,” Ms Tomasich said.
“Amy also will be an ambassador for USC at the event, able to liaise with international students who are considering study at our Sippy Downs campus.”
