Study skills course offered at Nambour
The University of the Sunshine Coast will soon hold a study skills course aimed at helping residents who are considering tertiary education.
USC’s Student Services will run the academic skills development course at the office of SPIRAL Inc, 122 Image Flat Road, Nambour, from 6-8pm Wednesdays from 5 October to 2 November 2011.
The five-night course is designed for adults wanting to upskill their learning abilities. It is aimed at those who have been away from formal education for some years or who did not complete high school.
USC Academic Skills Adviser Ian Dooley said the course would provide a supportive environment for those considering applying for entry to any university or college.
“It is particularly aimed at helping those who have always wanted to attend university but could not find a starting point,” he said.
“The skills that will be taught focus on the abilities required to undertake a wide range of degrees.
“There will be units on time management, proof-reading and editing, academic writing, reading strategies, summarising and note-taking, and learning how to reference material from printed and electronic sources.”
Mr Dooley said the focus was on skills development, not subject content, and there would be no tests. Participants will receive assistance and information on applying for tertiary study.
The only cost involved is a $10 charge for a set of study booklets.
