Two graduation ceremonies on 20 April

USC will hold two Graduation ceremonies on Wednesday 20 April

6 April 2011

The University of the Sunshine Coast will continue its expansion of Graduation ceremonies this year to keep pace with an increasing number of graduates.

For the first time, the University will hold three Graduation ceremonies in one year – two on Wednesday 20 April and a third on Friday 30 September.

The ceremonies on 20 April will comprise an 11am event for graduands from the Faculty of Business and the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, and a 5pm ceremony for Faculty of Science, Health and Education graduands.

The ceremony in late September will be for graduands from all three faculties who complete their degrees mid-year.

USC’s Vice-Chancellor Professor Greg Hill said the University had outgrown its tradition of having a single Graduation ceremony each year.

“It was a balance between having a major inclusive event that involved everyone and having a very long ceremony,” he said.

“There’s certainly a lot more people graduating from USC now than there was even five years ago. There were 740 graduates in 2006 and we expect about 1,400 people to graduate this year.

“The other side of it is that, as the University is getting bigger, we need more time to present honorary awards and PhDs.”

The two Graduation ceremonies on 20 April are each expected to take about one and a half hours and attract crowds of about 1,200-1,500 people.

They will feature plenty of pomp and ceremony and include academic processions, guest speakers, honorary awards and the presentation of medals for outstanding staff and graduands.
