USC teams ready for Relay For Life

Science Sirens team members Shelley McGuigan, Tamara Hoogvliet and Helle Carrigan show off their April Fools baton for the Relay For Life

31 March 2011

Thirty-three teams are set to take part in the inaugural University of the Sunshine Coast Relay For Life at the USC sports stadium on April 1-2.

Hundreds of people – comprising University students, staff, graduates and friends – have formed teams that will keep batons moving in a relay-style walk or run overnight from 7pm to 7am.

So far, the teams have raised $25,800 for Cancer Council Queensland, with more donations likely to roll in over the week ahead.

Organisers are delighted with the fundraising efforts of the relay participants, who have easily surpassed the original goal of $20,000.

Cancer Council Queensland Relay For Life Coordinator Sara Morley said the USC community had responded well to the challenge of being the first university in Queensland to stage a relay like this.

Ms Morley said the event would have an “April Fools” theme and feature free entertainment, prizes and some ceremonies.

“Cancer Council Queensland’s Relay For Life is more than just a fundraiser,” she said.

“It is an opportunity to get together with your community and celebrate cancer survivors, remember loved ones lost to cancer, and fight back against a disease that takes too much.”
