USC to honour inspirational businessman

USC Honorary Senior Fellow recipient John Shadforth

21 September 2011

A prominent Sunshine Coast businessman who actively inspires others to pursue their dreams is to receive an Honorary Senior Fellowship of the University of the Sunshine Coast.

John Shadforth, 69, of Caloundra has spent 35 years in the property industry through his business, Shadforth Dickson & Associates, and has served on the University’s Foundation Board since 1999.

Four years ago, he and his long-time business partner Robert Dickson founded the not-for-profit Encouragement Foundation, which promotes the value of encouragement in society, financially assists disadvantaged young pupils in East Timor, and offers scholarships to USC students.

Mr Shadford credits his achievements to a lifetime of support from others.

“Compared to many others, especially those millions of people who live in poverty, I think I have been lucky enough to have had a privileged life,” he said.

“Even though I have worked hard for it, I’ve realised that the reason I got there was because of the encouragement of other people.

“It is now a real privilege to be in a position to be able to inspire and encourage others.”

USC Vice-Chancellor Professor Greg Hill, who will present the honorary award at the University’s Graduation Ceremony on 30 September, said Mr Shadforth was an inspiring community leader and a strong supporter of USC.

“John is a donor and a major catalyst for friend-raising and fundraising for the University,” he said.

“He should be recognised and rewarded for his contributions to business, educational excellence, community liaison and philanthropy.”
