USC to honour Wall of Fame academics

19 September 2011

The University of the Sunshine Coast will celebrate one of its most successful years to date with a special ceremony for its award-winning academic and administrative staff tomorrow (Tuesday 20 September).

Large portraits of five staff members and a group photo of five more will be unveiled as new additions to USC’s rapidly expanding Wall of Fame in the University Library.

Media are welcome to attend this special celebration, from 5pm to 6.30pm on Tuesday 20 September. Award-winning staff will be there.

The Wall of Fame was launched in 2008 to celebrate USC’s success in winning five prestigious Australian Learning and Teaching Council (ALTC) citations over the previous three years.

Citations to USC have more than trebled in the three years since 2008, though, with staff collecting a further 17 ALTC citations for their dedication to student learning. Each citation is valued at $10,000.

This year’s winners were Senior Lecturer in Accounting Dr Peter Baxter, Senior Lecturer in Social Work Dr Christine Morley, Senior Lecturer in Nutrition and Dietetics Dr Fiona Pelly, Lecturer in Education Kylie Readman, and Tertiary Preparation Pathway course coordinator Emma Kill.

USC also gained its first ALTC National Program award, valued at $25,000, this year for its Regional Access, Inclusion and Success in Education (RAISE) project.

This project incorporates five outreach initiatives, including USC’s popular Headstart program for high school students and other initiatives that have raised the educational aspirations of people in the region from north Brisbane to Hervey Bay.

USC Vice-Chancellor Professor Greg Hill said it was important for the University to formally recognise the outstanding achievements of its staff.

“This celebration will be special for the University because it is the culmination of a number of years where USC has been very successful,” he said.

Professor Hill said USC now had the highest ratio of ALTC award-winning staff to students of any Australian university.
