USC to present sporting ‘Blues’ to students
Students who have excelled at state, national and international sporting events this year will be honoured at the University of the Sunshine Coast’s annual Sports Award Ceremony tomorrow (Friday 28 October).
Media are welcome to attend the event in the USC Sports Hall of Fame in the Health and Sport Centre foyer. Guests will gather from 9.30am for a 10am start.
USC Sport Manager Nathan Gordon said the guest speaker would be Jon Shaw, the head swimming coach of the Paralympic High Performance Program squad, which is currently using the recently opened USC pool for training.
Mr Gordon said the University annually presented “Half Blue” and “Full Blue” awards to its high-achieving sportspeople, as has been the tradition in many universities for centuries.
The tradition dates back to 1829, when rowing teams from Oxford and Cambridge universities each tied a blue scarf, one light blue and one dark blue, to their boats to distinguish themselves.
The University of the Sunshine Coast also presents a special “USC Green” award – to recognise a student who has volunteered their time to help boost sport at USC – along with awards for Team of the Year and Sportsperson of the Year.
“This event gives USC a great opportunity to acknowledge our students who are competing and succeeding at high levels in their chosen sports,” Mr Gordon said.
“To balance academic and sporting schedules is very demanding, so we use this ceremony to publicly applaud their achievements".
