World champion’s coach to visit USC

19 September 2011

The coach of world champion hurdler Sally Pearson will share her skills at the State Government’s Get Active Queensland Accreditation Program at the University of the Sunshine Coast tomorrow.

Sharon Hannan and her husband, athletics coach Peter Hannan, will attend the event, which will provide free training for teachers and school sport volunteers that can ultimately lead to coaching, officiating or sports first aid qualifications.

Media are welcome to the event at USC’s Sports Precinct. The best times for media interviews will be during morning tea from 10.30-10.45am and lunch 12.30-1pm.

USC’s Lecturer in Coaching Sciences Angela Calder said Ms Hannan’s inclusion in the line-up of coaching staff would provide a unique opportunity to learn from one of the world’s best coaches.

“Sally Pearson is a multiple world record holder, and to have her coach here at USC tomorrow is a real rarity because coaches of her calibre are normally so busy,” she said.

“If Sharon can coach a world champion, then there is a lot to be learnt from her as a coach.”

Almost 350 people will converge on USC’s campus to participate in 15 courses on offer, including football (soccer), rugby league, athletics and swimming.

Ms Calder said USC’s excellent on-campus sporting facilities had enabled the University to team up with the State Government to host this accreditation program.
