Young scientists to compete in USC event

Mountain Creek High School students enjoy the 2010 Science and Engineering Challenge at USC

13 July 2011

Hovercrafts, helicopters and missions to Mars will be investigated by 500 high school students during an exciting, two-day science contest at the University of the Sunshine Coast this week.

USC is presenting the annual Sunshine Coast Science and Engineering Challenge for the second time in conjunction with the University of Newcastle on Thursday 14 July and Friday 15 July.

Teams of Year 9 and 10 students from 14 schools across the region will compete in activities such as Hover Frenzy, Mission to Mars and Heli Rescue.

USC Professor of Engineering Mark Porter said the hands-on experiments and tasks were fun, interactive ways for young people to experience the creativity of science and engineering careers.

“It underscores the importance of these fields of study at university,” he said.

The challenge, conducted nationally by the University of Newcastle, aims to inspire children to continue studying science and engineering at senior levels.

The event is held in cooperation with the Science and Engineering Education Centre, Rotary, Sunshine Coast Regional Council, Engineers Australia and the University of Queensland.

The winner of last year’s challenge was St Andrews Anglican College at Peregian Springs.
