USC Student Leadership Award 2017

27 Sep 2017

Good afternoon everyone.

I would like to acknowledge that this meeting is being held on the traditional lands of the Gubbi Gubbi/Kabi Kabi Aboriginal Nation. I pay respect to their Elders past, present and emerging.

Welcome to colleagues, assembled guests and congratulations to award winners on your achievements.

The University of the Sunshine Coast is proud to acknowledge and recognise the many positive ways you have contributed to our university and to your communities through service and leadership. You have demonstrated ongoing commitment to personal and professional growth in learning enrichment activities, professional development and social and cultural community involvement.

The USC Student Leadership Award is new this year, and provides recognition for the voluntary, curricular and co-curricular activities in which our students develop a broad range of personal and professional skills and attributes that complement their university studies.

Leadership is one of the things that has made USC so successful over its 21-year lifespan, and this includes a willingness to grasp opportunities when and where they arise and turn them into successes:

  • Our new Moreton Bay campus opening in 2020, will mean new educational and employment opportunities for the region. Our goal is ensuring that as many students as possible can access a high-quality university close to home, and can share the social and economic benefits of higher education with their families, communities and region – just like you have done.
  •  But perhaps our most celebrated achievement, and one worth acknowledging in Learning and Teaching week, is that we’re a national leader and one of the highest rated universities in Australia in terms of overall student experience. Since 2007 we have consistently received a 5-star rating for teaching quality by Good Universities Guide – the only Public University in QLD to do so. This rating comes from University graduates, and shows the genuine partnership between our staff and students and our continued commitment to providing each of you with the learning experience you deserve.

As you graduate this week, we take this opportunity to wish you well as student leaders, who embody the values and spirit of USC. We are proud of your achievements.
