Exercise expert to discuss injury prevention

A USC exercise expert will present a public lecture on Friday 8 May on a topic that is close to the heart of every athlete – avoiding injury.

USC Sport’s Fitness Facilities Supervisor Aaron Turner will discuss the interventions that athletes can use to reduce their risk of non-contact injury.

He will also outline common non-contact injuries in sport and the factors that increase the risk of sustaining them.

Mr Turner’s presentation will be held at the USC Sports Stadium recreation room from 5.30-6pm as part of USC’s ‘Friday Night Sport Talks’ series.

To register for this event, contact Tania Stevenson on tstevens@usc.edu.au or 5459 4823.

Mr Turner is a USC graduate who has worked in the health and fitness industry since 2003, including as an exercise physiologist in rehabilitation clinics at Noosa Private Hospital’s Chronic Pain Clinic and at a Cardiac Rehabilitation Clinic run by USC and Queensland Health.

He specialises in clinical rehabilitation, strength and conditioning, and his current research interests include joint range of motion and dynamic balance.

Mr Turner is pictured winning USC's Great Court Race in 2010 when he was a Clinical Exercise Science student.

The Friday Night Sport Talks are aimed at people aged 13 and up but are open to anyone with an interest in sport, health and wellbeing.

The talks are a joint initiative of USC Sport Science, Centre for Support and Advancement of Learning and Teaching (C-SALT), the USC junior basketball club (USCBC) and USC Sport. They were initiated through an Office of Engagement Research Support Grant.

They are sponsored by local sport retailers and hosted by USCBC.

Future talk topics will be “Leadership and Teamwork: Keys to Success” on 29 May, “Don’t Forget Recovery!” on 12 June and Move Well, Play Well: Improve Your Game with Biomechanics” on 31 July.
