International expert at USC’s Learning and Teaching Week

31 Oct 2016

Improving students’ learning experiences will be on the agenda when an international expert in evidence-based teaching visits the University of the Sunshine Coast this week.

Professor Emerita Maryellen Weimer from Penn State University Berks will deliver a keynote address at USC’s annual Learning & Teaching Week, which starts today, Monday 31 October, and finishes on Friday 4 November.

The week will feature more than 40 presentations and discussions by USC staff around this year’s theme, ‘Teaching Visions’, which highlights how educational experiences will evolve over the coming years.

Topics will include using developmental psychology to understand the student experience, enhancing teaching with immersive 3D visualisations, and fostering entrepreneurial mindsets to improve graduate outcomes.

Professor Weimer will deliver her keynote address on Thursday 3 November from 4pm at USC’s Sippy Downs campus. She is available for media interviews.

A leading authority on effective teaching in higher education, Professor Weimer has written three books and is editor of The Teaching Professor blog, which is read by more than 10,000 educators worldwide.

During her week-long visit she will conduct workshops with USC staff on how to design classroom experiences that increase student participation and maximise learning outcomes.

USC’s Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor Professor Birgit Lohmann said the annual event provided an opportunity for USC staff to celebrate outstanding teaching practice and develop collaborations across disciplines to advance the learning experience for all USC students.
