Ngabung Djamga Gallery

The Ngabung Djamga Gallery is located in the Accelerator, Innovation Centre, University of the Sunshine Coast, 90 Sippy Downs Drive, Sippy Downs and open to the public

This Gallery is called Ngabung Djamga which means Mother Messenger in the Kabi Kabi language.

The naming of this exhibition space acknowledges the relationship of the local Indigenous people with the University of the Sunshine Coast.

By inviting Gubbi Gubbi people to name the gallery we were acknowledging their connection with the University, welcoming work by other people on to their land and honouring the artwork and cultural tradition.

The University sincerely thanks Debra Bennet, Beverly Hand and Auntie Pam White for their assistance in the naming ceremony.

The large scale paintings in that gallery are all women's works and primarily from the western and central desert communities of Papunya, Kintore and west to Lake Mackay, mostly from the Pintupi, Luritja and Ngaatjatjarra language groups from the west of Alice Springs.

The paintings have all been donated to the University and the unique thing about the USC Collection is that most of the artists are related - that, is some are sisters, some are mothers and daughters or aunties and there is one husband and wife also in our collection.

The University holds a significant collection of large-scale paintings from the western and central desert of Australia. The collection has been donated to the University over several years and is the largest public collection of its kind in the region.
