A touring exhibition by the IMA Brisbane of the internationally renowned contemporary Aboriginal artist, Vernon Ah Kee.
Ah Kee is a key figure in urban Aboriginal art. He is a member of the Brisbane-based artist collective proppaNOW.
He has exhibited in France, Germany, Austria and Canada, and is represented in the collections of the Queensland Art Gallery, the National Gallery of Australia, and the Museum of Contemporary Art. His work was featured in the Aboriginal Triennial, Culture Warriors at the National Gallery of Australia, the 2010 Biennale of Sydney, and represented Australia at the 2009 Venice Biennale group show, Once Removed.
In his Cantchant project, Ah Kee takes on the iconic subject of the beach, casting a critical eye on its special role in forming white Australian identity.
Cantchant pushes aside the commonsense of the beach as a destination for leisure, relaxation and fun, and presents it as a cultural battleground.

The Jacaranda Acquisitive Drawing Award (JADA) promotes innovation and excellence in Australian drawing with a major award of $15,000 sponsored by the Friends of the Gallery along with further acquisitions to the value of $15,000.
Acquisitions from the Jacaranda Drawing Award (JADA) enter the Grafton Regional Gallery’s nationally recognised collection of Australian contemporary drawing, it is the flagship of the Grafton Regional Gallery.
This exhibition features the 46 finalists selected for the 2010 JADA from 426 entries received, the second highest number of entries ever for this major Australian drawing event at Grafton Regional Gallery.
The Jacaranda Acquisitive Drawing Award was originally an open national art award, the Jacaranda Art Prize that ran from 1961 to 1987. The JADA was established in 1988. Artists acquired through the JADA include Maria Kontis, Michael Zavros, John Philippides, Gordon Bennett, Godwin Bradbeer, Luke Doyle, David Fairbairn and Deborah Klein.
The 2010 JADA judge was Julie Ewington a curator, writer and broadcaster who specialises in contemporary art. She is currently curatorial Manager, Australian Art at Queensland Art Gallery. Julie is an expert on contemporary Southeast Asian art, working on the Asia-Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art series at Queensland Art Gallery.
She curated the 2005 Fiona Hall exhibition; was the lead curator for Contemporary Australia: Optimism in 2008 and continues to curate Collection displays, producing a range of texts, including co-editing Brought to Light, the two-volume anthology on the Queensland Art Gallery’s Australian collection, published in 1998 and 2007.

Cutting, tearing and poking Judy-Ann Moule re-forms material objects through processes of suturing, wrapping and polishing for the exhibition Memory Sense.
Moule is a visual artist who creates sculpture and installation pieces using a multiplicity of found and cast-off materials. Influenced by childhood memories, reflective spaces are suggested through symbolic objects to represent attachments with people and places.
Moments of recall are captured as odd and vaguely erotic objects to explore themes of connection/disconnection and intimacy.

Anatomy of the Incomplete is an exhibition of drawings and installation works that form part of a doctorate research project combining Visual Art and Design and Creative Writing.
This project employs approaches from both visual art and literature in order to create a framework that explores the role of the illustrated book as object, the human body as object and the relationship between the metaphoric object and the space it inhabits.
Hill's work aims to alter the context of the illustrated book in order to create a narrative that inhabits multiple spaces (both physical and conceptual), in varying multimedia such as text and image, wall drawings, models, video and gallery installation.

The University of the Sunshine Coast offers a Bachelor of Computer-Based Design which prepares students for a variety of careers including graphic design, advertising, publishing, web design or multimedia design and development.
Students present an exhibition of large format prints on paper, canvas or vinyl that demonstrates the innovation and creativity practised in their course. Concentrating on digital illustration, students are encouraged to experiment through photography, painting and drawing skills combined with computer software to produce a dynamic body of artwork.
This major project requires students to select and explore a theme such as fantasy, human form, metropolis, culture, mechanics, technology or the natural world. They create a visual concept for an illustrative image and develop the idea through critical and historical contexts focusing on the potential of digital media.
The degree is one of the University’s most popular and gives students the skills they need to work either in-house or operate their own design business. The Proost De Deyne Family supports the purchase of artworks selected from this exhibition for the University Student Collection.
