LCDR Thomas Miller

Alumnus of the Year, Rising Star (October 2019)

Lieutenant Commander Miller is a full-time specialist Emergency Nursing Officer with the Royal Australian Navy who was sponsored by the Australian Defence Force to complete his 2010 Bachelor of Nursing and 2016 Master of Advanced Practice (Emergency Care) at USC. He has recently returned from military operations in the Middle East where he was selected to be Commander of Nursing for the Military Hospital and the Officer in Command of the Emergency Department at one of the largest military bases in Kabul, Afghanistan. This involved coordinating the activities of an emergency department in the centre of a warzone with clinicians from over twelve countries. (Full details via link above.)

Thomas has also been a Senior Nursing Officer for Tactical Trauma Teams and Head of Department of Australia’s Maritime Emergency and Resuscitation Capability for Operation Fiji Assist after Tropical Cyclone Winston, as well other operational deployments across Australia and overseas.

Recently, Thomas was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Commander, and based on his past performance, has been given a new role as Head of Nurse Education for the Royal Australian Navy where he oversees all nursing education, including the development of new training pathways for all nurses entering the Navy.

Thomas was awarded his Fellowship from of the College of Emergency Nurses Australasia recognising his substantial contribution to and professional excellence in emergency nursing.
