Abstract: Substance misuse poses a significant social and economic burden upon Australian society. The health effects of substance misuse are significant and include mental health conditions, physical injury and reduced life expectancy. Alcohol and other drug (AOD) treatment services are essential to reduce the costs associated with substance misuse. However, several recent government inquiries have raised issues regarding the safety and quality of AOD treatment in Australia. Concerns include poor access to appropriate treatment in a timely manner, limited availability of addiction medicine specialists, substandard post treatment support and exploitive pricing practices. This research examines the current governance structure of the AOD treatment sector in Australia. The research will consider whether the current regulatory processes are adequate to protect patients from harm, and if not, what are the possible alternatives. This study provides an original contribution to the research on the AOD treatment sector and aims to inform the sector by identifying any regulatory deficits and canvassing potential solutions for reform.
