USC celebrates National Science Week with Dr Karl

19 Aug 2018

On Monday 13 August, USC hosted one of Australia's most popular science commentators, Dr Karl Kruszelnicki AM as part of National Science Week celebrations.

Dr Karl, who was awarded an honorary doctorate by USC in 2016, visited USC’s Sunshine Coast campus for the day to deliver a series of presentations for thousands of USC students, school students and members of the community.

Close to 200 senior school students and teachers were invited to an exclusive breakfast with Dr Karl and influential female professionals for an informative discussion about women in science titled 'Women in Science: Game Changers and Change Makers'. These panellists included:

  • Dr Erica Mealy, a USC lecturer in ICT with more than 14 years’ experience as a software engineer
  • Georgia Keeshan, a USC engineering graduate and Coastal Engineer with the Sunshine Coast Council
  • Genevieve Kerr, a USC honours research student researching how super-tough synthetic materials could be made based on the structure and form of spider’s silk.

On the day, Dr Karl also delivered a keynote lecture to USC students as part of a series of celebratory events which included current research poster presentations, career development advice to students about careers in STEM, as well as book signings for students with Dr Karl.

Dr Karl ended his visit to USC at the USC Stadium, delivering a free evening public lecture to close to 2,000 attendees from the Sunshine Coast community. The popularity of the event required a change of venue in the lead up to the event to fit the large number of registrations received. The audience was a diverse mix of ages – from budding young scientists to more senior members of the community. Many lined up before and after the event for the opportunity to meet Dr Karl and get their books signed by the author.

USC has put together a special video documenting Dr Karl’s day at USC.
