The Make, Integrate, Explore (MIE) School program uses technology to raise awareness and aspirations of students to explore future careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (STEAM) fields.
As part of the program, students undertake STEAM activities linked to curriculum in Science, Digital Technologies and Design Technologies.
The program focuses on the development of a student's Computational Thinking Skills using Arduino – an open-source electronics platform designed for STEAM activities.
Students learn how to 'make' things using electronics and Arduino, how to 'integrate' by connecting to wifi and databases, and how to 'explore' by using these skills and other technologies to solve problems impacting their communities.
Throughout the program we discuss skills needed in the workforce to raise awareness of how the future of work is changing, the value of tertiary study, and the need for job builders and creators in the future.
The MIE School encourages all students to imagine themselves following science careers, while discouraging stereotypes related to science and ‘braininess’, with the aim to develop aspirations in STEAM careers.

MIE School teacher Professional Development
Learn how to teach computational thinking, binary, coding and how to use Arduino to teach students about electrical circuits, computer programming and designing projects for the classroom linked to the Australian Curriculum for Years 6, 7, and 8.
The MIE School teacher PD provides participants with example units of work, lessons and teaching resources. Teachers learn how to implement these units in their schools. Participants also receive a full Arduino kit as part of their registration. Morning tea and lunch provided on the day.
MIE School sessions in schools
USC preservice teachers have been trained to teach Computational Thinking Skills using Arduino and can teach three 90-minute introductory Arduino lessons to Year 6, 7 or 8 classes in schools in their area.
Preservice teachers organise a timetable for the three lessons with classes. Students learn how to wire a breadboard and RGB LEDs to create an electrical circuit. They also learn how to program the Arduino for three RGB LED flash and to create a flashing light show to music.
The lessons have been designed to complement and extend the existing curriculum of schools. The lessons have a focus on students developing Computational Thinking Skills linked to learning in Science and Technologies curriculum. Preservice teachers will also discuss with students the skills needed to become job builders and creators in the future workforce.
MIE School immersive day
Schools who participate in the MIE School sessions in schools and/or teachers who attend the MIE School teacher PD, will be invited to attend the MIE School immersive day at their local USC campus.
The focus of the MIE School immersive day is to expose students to Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (STEAM) activities and experiences linked to STEAM careers and courses at USC.
The MIE School immersive days at USC campuses will be facilitated by USC staff and preservice teachers, where students will engage in STEAM activities (using Arduino) and interact with USC staff.

Funding Source: Higher Education Participation and Partnership Program Funding. The objective of HEPPP funded programs such as MIE School is to increase the total number of people who access and participate in higher education.
