The Make, Integrate, Explore (MIE) School Senior program uses technology to raise awareness and aspirations of students in Years 7-12 to explore future careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) fields.
As part of the program, students undertake lessons which include hands-on inquiry based STEM activities linked to curriculum in Science, Digital Technologies and Design Technologies.
Students learn how to 'make' things using electronics and Arduino, how to 'integrate' by connecting to Wi-Fi and databases, and how to 'explore' by using these skills and other technologies to solve problems impacting their communities.
Throughout the program we discuss skills needed in the workforce to raise awareness of how the future of work is changing, the value of tertiary study, and the need for job builders and creators in the future.
The MIE School encourages all students to imagine themselves following science careers, while discouraging stereotypes related to science and ‘braininess’, with the aim to develop students’ aspirations in STEM careers.
