Breadcrumbs

High school attended: I actually attended three high schools. Victoria Point State High School, Bribie Island State High School and then did my last four years of school at Hervey Bay State High School.

Degree: Bachelor of Paramedic Science

Target graduation date: End of 2019

My journey: Throughout my early high school years, I was not sure what I wanted to do. All I knew was that I wanted to work in a fast-paced industry with a lot of variation. I decided farming drew me and I wanted to finish year 11 and 12 at a farm college up north. Mid-way through year 11, I decided I wanted something more suitable to my aspirations. I was given the chance to do a two-day program for students at the Maryborough hospital which led me to aim for a career in health care. In year 12 I did a placement through my school where I was riding along in an ambulance, seeing how their day to day life was. After that moment, I knew that I wanted to be a paramedic. Upon telling people what I wanted to do, I received a lot of negative feedback, saying I would not be able to attend university and that I would not make it through. I was in year 12 at the time, and it was too late to change into OP courses, so I finished school and spent the next three years working in retail before deciding to move to the Sunshine Coast.

When I arrived on the Sunshine Coast in 2016 I worked in retail for 6 months and decided it was time to push aside the negativity and do what I had dreamed of doing for years, and attend university. I had heard there was an option of undergoing a Tertiary Preparation Pathway (TPP), which is a program at university that gives you a rank to help towards getting into your chosen degree and to prepare you for university workload and life. After completing TPP and having an amazing time, I decided to apply for the Bachelor of Paramedic Science. Not long after, I received the email offering me a position. Now I am half way through my degree and upon completion I am considering enrolling into a Bachelor of Nursing Science which will give me further options in the health care field.

Career aspirations: I have many goals, and I have not decided which path I will take yet but they are all within the health or academic fields. My main aspiration is to progress through the ambulance service by undergoing further studies, then either moving on to do further studies in medicine or to work in rescue helicopters. My other aspiration would be to teach in the paramedic area at university.

Why did you become an Ambassador? USC has helped me to achieve many goals and realise that I am able to achieve my dreams. I believe university is for a lot of people and anyone can make their dreams come true with some motivation. Becoming a student ambassador allows me to share my story so far about my personal journey to USC. It also allows those who want to attend university to gain information about the range of campuses and programs offered across the many USC campuses.

What do you like about USC? USC is an amazing place to study. The lecturers and tutors know you by name, which gives it a more personal feel. The range of support services available also makes USC feel more like a big family then an institution. The structure of the campus and the architecture of the facilities gives it a more calming feel making it a place where you want to chill out and do what you love. The location of the campus is fantastic, we have the beach nearby and a wide array of flora and fauna on our campus. The diversity in the degrees available means there are people from all different parts of the country and world, allowing for many adventures and stories to be shared!
