Year 9 Young Scholars Project - Global Innovators Challenge (Health and Disease)
The Global Innovators Challenge is embedded in the Young Scholars Project Immersive Day, held at the USC, where Year 9s engage and interact with academics and USC students. The concept of the Global Innovators Challenge was developed by Engineers without Borders, and has been adapted from a University level project to a suit a more generic audience such as a Year 9 Science class.
In the first part of the day, students take part in a series of STEM-based hands-on activities which relate directly to the issues faced by people in the developing community of Bambui, Cameroon. The day culminates in a strategic planning session where students take on the roles of various STEM professionals, charged with the responsibility of coming up with solutions to Bambui’s issues using STEM.
The challenge activities contribute towards the development of skills in problem solving, the application of basic science, health and engineering fundamentals, and communication. The challenge uses STEM to address global issues such as energy, water and food. It gives students a real insight into how STEM can be used to tackle challenges faced by communities in the developing world, and how they can be part of the solution.
Year 11 Young Scholars Project - The Sum of our Parts (Biology)
The Year 11 module has a particular focus on research. Biology students will take the skills they developed during the Year 9 challenge and apply them at a deeper and more sophisticated level to address a range of tasks around multi-cellular systems within the human body. In this module, we ask the students to place themselves at the centre of their research, and relate their learning specifically to the health and well-being challenges faced by their generation.
Returning to USC for another exciting and interactive immersive day, the students rotate through a range of experiential activities in venues such as the USC Engage Lab, and collaborate with USC academic staff and high performance athletes. The aim is to enhance and enrich the senior Biology curriculum. The day is capped off by a research symposium, where they will learn from USC PhD candidates how to create research investigations, and how to present research findings in an engaging way. This will equip the students to deliver their solutions to the chosen research challenge back at school.
The Young Scholars Project also includes an aspirational component and endeavours to highlight pathways to higher education.
