Joanna 'Jojo' Santos is our cover artist for the 2018 Student Diary and a previous USC Design and Photography student.
We had the delightful opportunity to chat with Jojo about her creative practice and life since graduation, and here's what she had to say...
When did you graduate?
I graduated in April 2017.
Degree and study areas?
Bachelor of Computer-based Design at USC with a major in Graphic Design and minor in Photography.
Highlight of your degree?
Some of the major highlights would have to be the different relationships I made, as well as some tutors and how they helped inspire my love and passion for design and photography.
What are you up to now?
After graduating I went on an awesome 6-week European trip, which opened my eyes to worlds I hadn't seen. Hands-down one of the best experiences of my life to date. Now I freelance, doing a bit of design and photography, aiming to make it my main source of income. I want to love what I do!
Have you always had a creative spark?
I have always been creative from as young as I can remember. Always picking up a pencil, trying to glue something together or drawing funny cartoons of my little brother :)
What places on the Sunshine Coast inspire you?
My most inspirational place on the Sunshine Coast would have to be Currimundi Lake, I can get lost there for hours.
Is there an artist in particular you look to for inspiration?
Not really to be honest, I look up to and am inspired by so many artists but find mother nature would be my main muse.
Tell us a bit more about the artwork that is featured on the 2018 USC Student Diary. What does the design mean to you?
The design expresses my passion to get creative and use my hands. I find human hands extraordinary - there is almost no limit to what they can do.
What medium was used?
The medium used for the USC diary cover design was pen on paper, then I digitally cleaned it up.
Are your ideas often sporadic and spontaneous or planned and sketched in detail?
My ideas generally come to me in spontaneous moments, although I do roughly sketch my ideas for the larger features (and so I don't forget the idea haha). I let my mood influence the smaller finer details. I draw inspiration from life and love exploring and meeting interesting people.
