Project Description

You have been invited to participate in this research project conducted by the Regional Universities Network (RUN) in partnership with the University of the Sunshine Coast. The purpose of this research project is to investigate student and staff experiences of an integrated model of support combining academic and pastoral dimensions. You are being invited to participate in this research project because you have been involved in Academic Liaison at the University of the Sunshine Coast. Your contribution to this research is part of a broader research project across RUN universities. Identifiable information will not be shared.


If you agree to participate in this research project, you will be asked attend three focus groups over one year. The focus group will take place at a time and place to be advised and will take approximately 60 minutes. Approximately 12 other attendees will attend, facilitated by a research assistant with no affiliation to your role. You will be asked about your experiences and observations of academic student success advising. The focus group will be recorded, transcribed and de-identified.

Your participation is voluntary. Your participation, or not, will not affect your relationship with the University of the Sunshine Coast, members of the research team, or your employer. Your employer will not know who participated in this research project. If you decide to take part and later change your mind, you are free to withdraw up to the point at which data is aggregated and analysed. Please contact the Chief Investigator (listed above) to discuss withdrawal.


You will be asked to provide written consent. Consent is for your data and information to be collected in an identifiable/re-identifiable format, stored in a non-identifiable format, and used in analysis and publications in a non-identifiable format. If you are under the age of 18, the research team asks that you discuss participation and consent with someone who can support you in making your decision.

Consent is sought for your data and information to be used for this research project and future research projects that are extensions of, or closely related to, this original project or in the same general area of research.

Risks and Benefits

There are no anticipated risks associated with your participation. Due to the nature of the project, it may be possible for your identity to be inferred. Where this may be possible, please let the research team know if you wish to review transcripts/direct quotes/publications etc.

Sometimes thinking about the themes discussed in the interview can create uncomfortable or distressing feelings. You are not required to answer questions and you may discontinue or pause the interview at any time if required. The Academic Liaison project is in the early stages of development. Your participation in this research project will directly benefit you in your role through an iterative design process where data collected will inform the development of Academic Liaison project. Your participation will also contribute to knowledge in the discipline.

Privacy, Confidentiality and Results

Any data collected as a part of this research project will be stored securely as per the University of the Sunshine Coast Research Data Management Procedures. All comments and responses will be treated confidentially unless required by law. Data audio recordings will be destroyed at the conclusion of the project. Only the Chief Investigator, Principal Investigator and Lead Investigator will have access to identifiable data. Your data will be de-identified if you choose to participate.

To ensure robust data collection in focus groups, it will be necessary for all participants to be recorded. Data, recording and transcriptions will be de-identified. Participation status or individual comments will not be shared with the funding body, staff or employer. Where this may be possible, please let the research team know if you wish to review transcripts. Only the research team and the transcription service will have access to the transcriptions. It may be possible for other focus group participants to identify you. All participants will be reminded of the confidential nature of participation in the research.

The results of this research project may be presented at external or internal conferences or meetings, or by publication. If you would like a summary of findings of this research project, please contact the Chief Investigator (listed above).
