Ian McConachie AM

Honorary Senior Fellow (April 2014)

Ian McConachie AM was named an Honorary Senior Fellow in April 2014 in recognition of his dedication and contribution in pioneering a sustainable science-based macadamia industry.

Ian McConachie AM has dedicated much of his working life to the advancement of a science based macadamia industry and is best described as being an avid macadamia enthusiast, innovator, researcher and conservationist, grower and field researcher. He is the founder and former Chairman of the Board of the large Queensland processor Suncoast Gold Macadamias (Australia) Limited, and for 30 years was a Director of the Australian industry body, The Australian Macadamia Society as well as the founding Chair of the Macadamia Conservation Trust. Ian’s belief that the local industry would only grow and compete if its quality standards were the best in the world, thus differentiating the product in the domestic and export markets has been realised. Suncoast Gold was the first macadamia factory in the world to achieve Quality Assurance Accreditation to International Standard ISO 9002 and including Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points. His work in the food industry and the macadamia industry has also been recognised nationally with a Member in the Order of Australia (AM) for Services to Macadamia Conservation and internationally by a broad range of organisations which demonstrates the breadth of his knowledge, investigation and innovation. The most significant among his publications is The Macadamia Story. This book remains to date, the most complete history of the industry ever compiled. Ian also worked on an expanded book to accommodate and preserve all aspects of the industry.
