Professor Brian Yates


Professor Brian Yates obtained his PhD from the Australian National University. After postdoctoral positions in the USA he returned to Australia in 1989 where he took up an Australian Research Fellowship at the University of Tasmania, became Head of Chemistry and Professor, was seconded to the Australian Research Council in Canberra as an Executive Director, and returned to the University of Tasmania in 2015 to become Dean of Science.

Professor Yates has an international reputation in computational chemistry research as applied to mechanisms of organic and organometallic chemistry, he was awarded the Carrick National Teaching Award for the Physical Sciences in 2010, and he co-led the development of the Australian Threshold Learning Outcomes for Science. He became President of the Australian Council of Deans of Science in 2016.
