Profile

Ken has worked in universities all of his professional life and has deliberately undertaken a variety of roles both inside and outside of the institution to develop his experience and a broad knowledge of the higher education sector. Over his career, he has developed leadership and management skills in the roles of Executive Dean, Head of School and Head of Department, which include leading a number of distinct disciplines.

The focus of Ken's research has been applied in nature in three distinct areas. The first concerns applied research into the health consequences of, and individual differences in adaptation to shift work and more recently in therapy for sleep disorders. A second theme is concerned with the methodological issues in applied research, most notably the analysis of brief single case time-series and in measurement across a range of disciplines. A third strand of publications span the broad range of the health science disciplines with a focus on health psychology and psychometric development of clinical measures. This work has mainly involved collaborations with colleagues from other disciplines and interdisciplinary teams.

Ken has more than 140 publications in international refereed journals. Included in this list are eight book chapters and editorship of a successful undergraduate textbook. As well as these publications, he has more than 80 presentations at national and international conferences. He has edited journals and commonly acts as a referee for a number of journals. He has reviewed grant applications for a number of bodies including the Australian Research Council (ARC) and the National Health and Medical Research Council (NH&MRC) and has served on an NH&MRC grant review panel. He has held an ARC Discovery Grant and was a Chief Investigator A (CIA) on an NH&MRC funded project. He has been successful in attracting substantial grant income for more than 20 projects.

Ken has taught extensively across the range of undergraduate and postgraduate subjects and across a range of content areas. He is actively sought after as a supervisor of graduate students and has been involved in the supervision of more than 40 completed postgraduate students (PhD, DPsych and Masters by Research).
