Creative Writing student’s book in world awards

Creative Writing student Donna Thompson displays her eBook 'Collected'

8 January 2014

An eBook about mental illness self-published on iBooks by a University of the Sunshine Coast Creative Writing student is a finalist in the Digital Book World Awards.

Donna Thompson, 43, of Buderim, recently completed her Honours degree at USC and published her eBook ‘Collected’.

Aimed at the young adult educational market, her enhanced eBook for iPad is a digital narrative that explores bipolar disorder.

Ms Thompson will leave the Coast for New York on Sunday 12 January to attend the Digital Book World Awards and three-day conference on digital publishing.

USC Vice-Chancellor Professor Greg Hill will fund part of her travel. Professor Hill congratulated Ms Thompson on her success in becoming a finalist and wished her well for her future writing career.

Lecturer in Creative Writing Dr Ross Watkins, who was Ms Thompson’s Honours supervisor, said his student had been rewarded for her vision and dedication.

“It is clear that her exploratory work within eBooks takes advantage of the emerging nature of that market,” Dr Watkins said.

Ms Thompson said she was honoured by her book’s nomination as a finalist in the category of Enhanced Fiction and excited by the success of her USC studies.

“I’ve been very active within the University community throughout my Bachelor of Arts and Honours degrees,” she said.

Her roles at USC included representation on student, faculty and Golden Key Honour Society committees as well as peer adviser and academic skills adviser.

Other Digital Book World Awards finalists include major international publishers like Penguin, Scholastic, Harper Collins, Random House and Yale University Press.
