Scientist to share tips on youth strength training

A University of the Sunshine Coast sport scientist will share his expert advice on weight training for young athletes at a free public lecture on Friday 20 May at 5.30pm.

As part of USC’s Friday Night Sport Talk series, Postdoctoral Research Associate Dr Luke Hogarth will provide an overview of weight training techniques and the latest evidence-based practice for adolescent and pre-adolescent athletes.

Dr Hogarth has worked as a strength and conditioning coach with both developmental and professional athletes from rugby league, Australian Rules, wheelchair rugby and swimming. He is currently undertaking research funded by the International Paralympic Committee.

Dr Hogarth’s lecture, titled ‘Weight Training for the Adolescent Athlete: How Young is Too Young?’, will discuss the considerations that parents and children athletes should make when deciding to use weight training techniques.

The talk, aimed at anyone 13 and older, will also include advice on a range of science-based resources to provide further guidance on managing children athletes.

The 30-minute talk will be held at the Sports Stadium recreation room at the University’s Sippy Downs campus. Barbecue food is available for purchase.

The Sports Talks were initiated through a USC Engagement Grant and are sponsored by local sports retailers.
