High school students can have Headstart to USC

High school students who are keen to begin their university experience early are invited to an information session at the University of the Sunshine Coast on Thursday 8 September from 5-6pm.

USC will outline its award-winning Headstart program that offers Year 11 and 12 students the chance to study tertiary subjects while still at high school.

The program allows participants to gain credits towards their Queensland Certificate of Education and a USC degree at the same time.

The information evening will include a first-hand account by a previous Headstart student who is now studying at USC as well as a presentation about the subjects and support available.

Students and parents can speak with USC staff and hear more about the application process, eligibility and costs.

Bachelor of Business student Kateesha Hembrow completed a Headstart course in Tourism, Leisure and Events while in Year 12 at St Columban’s College last year, and said it gave her a great insight into what university would be like.

“I’m so glad I decided to sign up for Headstart,” she said. “It gave me credit for a first-year course, but it also got me used to the campus, the expectations from the lecturers and tutors and uni life generally.

“I wasn’t completely sure whether I wanted to go to university, but doing the Headstart subject in Year 12 really helped me solidify the decision to enrol.

“Now I’m studying a Business degree majoring in Tourism, Leisure and Event Management, and I’m really happy with my results so far.”

The information session will be held at USC’s Sippy Downs campus on Level 3 in Building J. To attend the information session, register at: www.usc.edu.au/headstart
