A former flight attendant has glided gracefully into a new career as a dietitian at one of Brisbane’s busiest hospitals after completing a degree at the University of the Sunshine Coast.
Elyssa Hughes, 27, of Bribie Island recently graduated from USC with a Bachelor of Nutrition and Dietetics and has started as a graduate medical dietitian at the Mater Private Hospital.
Her work involves treating a diverse range of patients in the rehabilitation, neurology and general medical departments.
“I work with patients who have conditions like stroke, diabetes, or pulmonary issues, and ensure that they have the best nutritional intake possible to aid their recovery,” said Elyssa, a St Columban’s College graduate.
“I’m really enjoying the interaction with a range of allied health workers, and using the research skills I gained at USC to ensure best practice in treating my patients.”
Elyssa enrolled at USC after spending five years travelling the world as a flight attendant, and said taking the plunge into a new career had been a wonderful decision.
“My experience at USC was fantastic,” she said. “The lecturers were all people who had worked in the field, and hearing about their experiences helped grow my own passion.
“I loved the relaxed feel on campus and the feeling that the teaching staff were really endeavouring to bring out the best in every student.”
