Promoting good health with a lot of heart.

"My job is really good. Much more than I expected. The values I work to are really good. What we're working on is helping to make great progress and create positive outcomes for the communities we're involved with.

We work with women who are pregnant from the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. We're looking to increase their pre-natal health, and once the child is born, to decrease the mother's visits to hospitals. We are also trying to help the mothers have improved employment chances.

I work on the monitoring and evaluation team. We monitor data coming in from the sites we're working in – Alice Springs, Wellington (NSW) and Cairns. I then evaluate that data with my manager and make outcomes known to the public and the federal government.

Work placements during my degree at USC really helped me prepare for getting a job. I did two of them, each for up to five weeks.

One was at Toowoomba Regional Council, where I conducted an assessment to determine the wellness needs of the workers. The other was with the Cancer Council in Sydney. That work helped parents of kindergarten children learn healthy meal ideas for breakfasts and lunch boxes.

The tutors were really great, too. They were open and honest about what happens and they created assessments that were going to be really helpful.

From my first semester, I got really excited that I had finally found something I was looking for and knew I had the support at USC."
