Paramedic Science graduate starts work in Gympie

Liz Perry

22 April 2014

Liz Perry of Buderim has secured her dream job as a paramedic with the Queensland Ambulance Service in Gympie after completing a Bachelor of Paramedic Science at the University of the Sunshine Coast.

Liz, 32, who graduated from USC on 11 April, said supportive University staff and the student-friendly USC environment helped her achieve her goal.

“It’s amazing – exactly what I wanted,” Liz said.

She said her role involved providing expert medical and clinical care to people in the community as well as “compassion and TLC” for many people who may not require emergency assistance but who still needed a hand.

“It really is about caring for the community on so many levels,” she said.

Originally from Byron Bay, Liz attended high school at Concordia College in Toowoomba. She went on to qualify and work as a teacher before deciding to become a paramedic and choosing to study at USC.

“I had heard from others that it was a very student-orientated university,’’ she said.

“The support, encouragement, advice and follow-up from the Paramedic staff exceeded my expectations. Having worked as a teacher, I was really impressed with just how committed the teachers in the paramedic faculty at USC are.

“There was a real sense of community within my course and it was always a fun, fresh, hands-on learning environment.”

Liz said the USC campus was a great place to relax between study commitments.

“The campus and the grounds are beautiful and it was a pleasure to take a study break, grab a coffee and chill out with friends at one of the great cafes with kangaroos, blue sky and green grass as a backdrop.”
