An Environmental Science student at the University of the Sunshine Coast has been awarded a scholarship worth $15,000 as part of a Queensland Government program aimed at helping women gain qualifications in traditionally male-dominated industries.

Brittany Elliott, 18, of Buderim was one of 120 recipients in the second round of Supporting Women Scholarships, presented by Education, Training and Employment Minister John-Paul Langbroek at Parliament House in early April.

Brittany, in the first year of her Bachelor of Environmental Science degree at USC, said she was honoured to receive the scholarship, which will provide $5,000 each year during her studies.

“It comes as very welcome encouragement,’’ she said. “This will allow me to really focus on my studies and to achieve the best that I can.”

Brittany, who is also a USC Vice-Chancellor’s Merit Scholarship recipient, has been passionate about environmental science since high school.

“I became involved with the Primary Industry Centre for Science Education and met amazing USC lecturers including Professor in Agricultural Ecology Helen Wallace and Professor in Vegetation and Plant Ecology Alison Shapcott,” she said.

USC Professor of Nursing Marianne Wallis, who attended the Supporting Women Scholarships ceremony in Brisbane on behalf of USC, said the scholarship program was an excellent initiative.

“It’s great to see that USC is attracting students of the calibre of Brittany and that the Queensland Government is encouraging and supporting women to engage in fields that haven’t always been traditional areas for women,” Dr Wallis said.
