Rebecca Wilson of Gympie has secured a dream job on Fraser Island after completing a Bachelor of Environmental Science at USC.

Rebecca, 22, who graduated from USC on Thursday 2 October, is now working as the ranger supervisor at Kingfisher Bay Resort on Fraser Island.

“My job involves taking tours, doing wildlife presentations, helping guests with fauna and flora enquiries and supervising a team of rangers,” she said. “We also work with school groups and educating them about the environment which is very fulfilling.”

The former James Nash State High School student said she had thoroughly enjoyed her studies at USC and the course content was very relevant to her new job.

“Classes incorporated both theory and practical work, including field trips, which kept us all really interested and also taught us how to apply our knowledge to real world situations,” she said.

“For assignments in some courses I chose local issues such as dingo management in rural areas and on Fraser Island and ecologically sustainable development.

“I found that this knowledge meshed very nicely with the work I am doing now, and was helpful when going into a supervisor role straight out of uni.”

After starting university in Brisbane, Rebecca transferred to USC and enjoyed the financial benefits of being able to live at home in Gympie and use the University’s shuttle bus to get to class.

“I also found the atmosphere at USC more laid back and there was a lot more interaction between students and lecturers which was great,” she said.

“The ability to schedule my full-time timetable down to three days meant that I could also do volunteer work with the Mary River Catchment Coordinating Committee and the Department of Natural Resources and Mines which complemented my study nicely.”
