USC graduate Gemma Brooks of Kallangur landed her first job in events management while she was still completing her degree.

Gemma, 21, who graduated from USC on Thursday 2 October with a Bachelor of Business (Tourism, Leisure & Event Management) has worked as functions coordinator at Club Pine Rivers in Bray Park since the start of the year.

The former Grace Lutheran College student said she was applying many of the skills she gained from her degree at work.

“We cater for a range of functions including weddings, engagements and corporate events,” she said.

“So I use what I learned about time management, managing people including the allocation of staff roles and the importance of having a good management style.”

Gemma, who is aiming to work for a large events firm, chose to study at USC because it offered the exact course she wanted and it was easier to head north to the Sunshine Coast than travel to Brisbane.

“I enjoyed being able to drive to university against the flow of peak hour traffic,” she said. “The USC campus is really easy to find your way around and has comfortable surroundings and heaps of new resources to use.

"I also loved the small class sizes and the fact that I could always contact my tutors when I needed to.

“My job is part time, so I’m currently looking for a full-time job in either event management or marketing and I reckon that my degree and work experience so far will give me a big advantage.”
