Graduate makes mark in world of global business

A University of the Sunshine Coast graduate who heads human resources for an international firm’s operations in India, the Middle East and Africa has been named one of Norway’s best young leaders.

Hege Bekkedal said USC’s Bachelor of Business was the launch pad for a global career with Norwegian-based quality assurance and risk management company DNV GL whose operations span more than 100 countries.

Currently based in the United Arab Emirates, Ms Bekkedal is accountable for 2,000 employees and manages employee-related matters in countries with complex labour laws and Sharia law enforcement.

“To have the opportunity for an international career based out of Norway was at the top of my wish list when I decided to study abroad at USC,” said Ms Bekkedal who gained a Master in Leadership and Organizational Psychology in Norway after graduating.

“DNV GL is dedicated to helping customers make the world safer, smarter and greener and has many opportunities for global roles and movement within the company.”

She said USC’s Bachelor of Business (Management) had assisted her in reaching her career goals.

With international study experience as a pre-requisite, her degree helped to secure an initial trainee management position at DNV GL and provided a solid foundation for her career.

“It continues to provide a wide perspective on the business world, international management and finance,” she said.

Being named as one of Norway’s foremost leadership talents under 35 years by the nation’s largest online business magazine was acknowledgement that she was making a difference through her leadership.

“For me it is about doing the right thing and supporting what I believe in. To see that this is appreciated by other people makes me happy, proud and humble,” she said.

She said she her coach-like management style focused on listening, being transparent and finding solutions together. “DNV GL has a complex setup in business areas and geography. Working in HR, I find this motivating as I enjoy the challenges and benefits having such diverse national cultures, religions and backgrounds bring.

“I value different personalities and believe a diverse team delivers the best results. Having a great, empowered team with trust and common goals around me makes my role easier.”
