The University of the Sunshine Coast is actively committed to advancing the educational and employment opportunities and outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres and Torres Strait Islander people as part of its core business, and as a future investment in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander human capital.

Focus area: The Reconciliation Action Plan will provide the overarching framework to assist the University in embedding Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander–specific initiatives and actions within day-to-day practice across the University.

  1. Encourage development of research opportunities at USC for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students.
  • Provide support for collaborative and co-operative research between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and non-indigenous academics
  • Include 1 research profile in USC publications, including the website, per semester. Profile would be of a USC Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander researcher or a non-indigenous researcher investigating Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander research areas
  • Embed specific mention of providing opportunities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander applicants within guidelines for all research scholarships  and other research opportunities
  • Ensure understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander content by ensuring research teams and HDR panel members complete an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural learning program
  • Appoint one Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander member to each of the Human Research Ethics Committee (HREC) and the Animal Research Ethics Committee (AREC), together with the establishment of a sub-committee of HREC comprising Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander expert members who will deal with specific cases pertaining to human research with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities."
