A base to explore, research, learn and stay on the world’s largest sand island - uniquely located on a UNESCO World Heritage site at the northern end of three neighbouring biospheres.

UniSC's K'gari Research Station is one of a few university-operated field stations located on a UNESCO World Heritage site, within three neighbouring biospheres.

Ideally located on the eastern beach, it is a base for students, researchers, school groups and Island visitors to experience K'gari's globally significant sand dunes, rainforests, freshwater lakes, wildlife and culture.

  • Starting point for a number of walks and drives to the Island's natural wonders.

The surround area is great for exploring - follow the the K'gari Station Discovery Walk.

Research

The K'gari Research Station is a central part of UniSC's commitment to increase understanding and protection of the Island's unique geology, ecology and exceptional Butchulla culture.

Research investigate its rare ecosystems, usual lifeforms and ancient, evolving landscapes.

This includes studies into the Island's wongari (dingo) populations, fire recovery and the impact of four wheel drive traffic.

From animal ecology and environmental science to mapping with drones, field studies on the Island add an invaluable dimension to several UniSC programs and courses.

UniSC invites researchers from Australia and across the globe to use the station for their research and teaching activities.
