In this course you will explore the relationship between language and culture, drawing on insights from linguistics, sociolinguistics, discourse analysis, ethnography, cultural and critical theories. You will discover the co-constitutive nature of language and culture, and examine how these theoretical understandings can be translated into classroom practice in a variety of TESOL contexts. The course also emphasises the need for language teachers and learners to be interculturally competent, that is, to be able to construct identities and negotiate meanings across languages and cultures.
