All managers have to exercise leadership if they are to be fully effective at work. This aim of this course is for candidates (enrolled managers) to have a sound understanding of the nature of leadership including the main conceptual frameworks and theories that underpin managerial practice. The course commences with an overview of the key theories and models of leadership that have been proposed over the past century, with emphasis on those of greatest relevance today. Next, the course explores the relevance of emotional intelligence to leadership. Then leadership is analysed in terms of power and politics and also in terms of group dynamics. Finally, candidates examine managers’ leadership styles, including their own, across a range of behavioural dimensions.
